  1. So I thought I had better submit the Engineer Report on the “squeak”. It started when we left home three days ago, at first it was just a little
squeak , the kind of squeak that you could ignore but like all minor problems you ignore it just gets worse. The squeak was definitely related to the speed of rotation of the pedals, it sounded like a kind of a rubbery squeak. At first we didn’t know whether it was coming from the front or the back.
In Kendal I tweaked and lubed everything in sight (or at least I thought I did!!). On setting off from Kendal all was well but as we climbed Shap it re-emerged and just got louder and louder. Various attempts were made to stop it, we had narrowed it down to coming from the back and seemed to have something to do with the position of Katherine’s feet relative to the pedals. Last night in Penrith I moved the clips on the bottom of her shoes.
This morning we set off, all was well for the first few hundred yards but it was back but this time it was a full on loud, couldn’t be ignored squeak!! Further shifting about in the back and the problem was traced to the seat post. Katherine’s seat has a spring in the seat post to cushion the bumps, it was that. Squirted it with chain lube and it went quiet!!!
On arrival in Gretna I took the thing apart ( as much as you can ) it looks pretty worn to be honest, the problem is a nylon bush but you can’t change it but I slathered it with lube (will need some grease I would think but don’t have any) If we get to Glasgow then we can probably get a replacement if we have to. Hopefully tomorrow it will remain quiet, mind you looking at the weather forecast probably won’t be able to hear it above the sound of rain lashing down!! There is a yellow weather warning tomorrow for rain 😳🌧️. Will update tomorrow.
And the moral of the story, there isn’t one really, just letting you know that being the engineer it’s all wine and roses!!

  2. I was definitely curious...glad you solved the mystery! I do love a quiet bike when you can't hear anything but the tires crushing miles down the road.
