Back to a bigger day today! 53 miles. Left after breakfast at the hotel and went via the ferry to the south bank of the river.
Our trip today began with 30 miles to Melk which was our planned lunch stop. It was pretty much gorge all the way. The path was all paved, sometimes road, mostly cycle path - all alongside the river. We paced ferries and river cruise boats as we went. Liz was regularly cruising along at 12-13mph. Stopped at Ypps for morning coffee and at the Lidl there for trail sustenance - sliced meats, cheeses, fruit, nuts. Then it was off to Melk for lunch.
Stopped in Melk in a square overlooked by Melk Abbey, which has been around for a thousand years. They currently host 900 students - male and female. The afternoon was spent travelling through vineyard after vineyard after vineyard. Spoke about the vision for pedalling along the Danube yesterday - add vineyards to it!

Pretty near perfect cycling day today, sunny cloudy and about 22 C top temp with light winds. Hardly any roads to contend with, enough miles to know you’ve been on a ride without being knackered, fantastic scenery including vineyards castles etc. the standard of accommodation's has been outstanding and the navigation spot on. Great “mission controlling” from the back. In other news the tandem box is now reported to be in Hungary, hooray, hopefully it will arrive before we do.
Tomorrow it’s c 50 miles to Vienna, it’s I think 10 years or more since we have been and Liz’s first visit. Looking forward to the “rest day” there day after tomorrow. Beautiful day for riding from the look of it. All the vineyards had me thinking of when Madge and I used to ride in Napa and Sonoma, winery to winery, picking up a bottle from each. Hopefully you get a chance to take one in on your ride...loosens up the legs for the continuing journey! 😁
