Danube - Krems to Vienna

We were quite quick getting up and out of Krems this morning - actually Liz was faster than we were (we who linger over 3 cups of coffee!).  Picked up food for the day, as it’s 51 miles and then headed back across the Danube to the south bank for the trip to Vienna and a rest day!

The river is still getting wider and we passed our largest river boat cruise ship thus far.  The path was paved all day today.

We stopped alongside the river for coffee and in Tulln for lunch.  The breeze by the river kept us cool (ish). One of the things I learned on the boat was to keep the crew fed, even more important when pedalling.  We have breakfast and head out - 12 miles later we stop and I ask if people want a ___.  Nope, all good.  I pull out a ___ and everybody has one.  This continues throughout the day.  Refueling is so important and even if people aren’t starving, when you’re doing these kinds of miles, fuel is important.

Today’s route was all along the south bank of the river until we got to Vienna where we followed the cycle path by the canal almost all the way to our hotel. Made it to a beer garden, but as we were 6 miles outside of Vienna no beer (or wine) for us. Ice cream instead. Great graffiti as we went, but virtually no trash anywhere!

Staying just adjacent to the Old Town for our rest break.  Liz picked a great hotel in an excellent location - just a few blocks from St. Stephens Cathedral.  Sat in the square having a cocktail. and listened to the cathedral bells ring. Amazing!  Going to try and get a peek inside tomorrow!

Had dinner at a ‘stube’, a very traditional Austrian restaurant with very traditional dishes! Very nice with some local wines!  Back to the hotel for lots of sleep until we tour the city tomorrow! Very pleased w/ the progress so far. Finished this 3rd section and now heading to the 4th - after our day of rest! And the big news of the day - the bike box has arrived in Budapest!

Comments:
  1. Katherine’s blog entry as always captures the main points. Very pleased the box showed up in Budapest! It’s not so much the cost of them (well over $1000), it’s the hassle of not having it for the trip back.

You know that you're disconnected when the conversation goes:
“I’ve been a day out all week, I think it’s Saturday and it’s Friday.”
    “Actually, it’s Thursday.”
Which it is as I write this…..

Welcome rest day then on to the final section of the tour into Hungary and on to Budapest.

  2. Love the matching red biking jersies!

  3. In addition to confusing which day it is, we keep confusing the location. Vienna has become Venice! LOL
